5 Scary Tricks Cyber Criminals Use

October 28, 2022

Halloween is a time of year when things that go bump in the night are supposed to be out and about. But did you know that cybercriminals are always lurking and using frightening tactics to try and scare people into giving up their personal information all year round?

In this blog post, our team will discuss five tricks that cybercriminals use to frighten people into giving up sensitive data. Stay safe online this Halloween by knowing what to look out for:

1. Phishing Scams

One of the most common scare tactics used by cybercriminals is phishing. Phishing scams are emails or websites that attempt to trick people into providing sensitive information such as passwords or credit card numbers. Be especially careful of emails that ask you to click on a link or open an attachment, as these may contain viruses or spyware.

2. Ransomware

Another common tactic used by cybercriminals is ransomware. Ransomware is a type of malware that locks your computer or mobile device until you pay a ransom. Be sure to install antivirus software on your devices and keep them up-to-date, as this will help protect you from ransomware attacks.

3. Scareware

Scareware is a type of malware that displays fake security alerts in order to scare people into buying bogus antivirus software. Be very careful about any security alerts that pop up on your screen, as these may be part of a scareware attack.

4. Baiting

Baiting is a technique used by cybercriminals to lure people into downloading malicious software or disclosing sensitive information. Be very careful about any files or links you download, as they may be baiting scams designed to infect your computer with malware.

5. Spyware

Spyware is a type of malicious software that can wreak havoc on your computer by stealing sensitive information such as passwords and credit card numbers or even hijacking your web browser to display ads or redirect you to other websites. The best way to protect yourself from spyware is to be vigilant about what you download onto your computer and always pay close attention when installing new software. Additionally, it is a good idea to install an anti-spyware program on your computer and keep it up-to-date, as this will help to detect and block any existing spyware.
