Touch Screens: Projected Capacitive, Resistive, and Custom
Touch Screens: Projected Capacitive, Resistive, and Custom

A touch screen is the sensor that turns a finger, glove, or stylus on the display surface into input, and we supply projected capacitive (PCAP) and resistive touch screens, standard from 3.2 to 65 inches and custom from 2.2 inches. PCAP, by far the most common, senses touch as a change in capacitance across a grid of transparent electrodes behind the cover glass, and supports multi-touch. Resistive registers pressure where two conductive layers meet. The design is decided by how the screen will be operated (bare fingers, gloves, water on the surface), the cover glass, the controller interface (USB, I²C, or RS232), and how the touch screen joins the display. Our engineers program the touch controller for those conditions, and we bond touch, cover glass, and display with VacuBond® optical bonding.
How to choose
- Gloves and water: the PCAP controller can be programmed to tell water droplets from a touch, to detect water, salt, and blood, and to work with gloves, from two layers of surgical latex to ESD textile, firefighter, chemical-resistant, and chain-mail gloves.
- Cover glass: PCAP works through glass up to 15 mm thick or PMMA (acrylic) up to 4 mm, with anti-glare, anti-reflective, and anti-fingerprint finishes.
- Infinite Touch Design: a PCAP touch film we laminate onto a cover glass made for the design; the number of touch points depends on the glass thickness.
- Resistive: 4-wire and 5-wire analog resistive, operated by pressure.
- Integration: USB, I²C, or RS232 controllers, chip-on-flex options, and a custom tail position.
Touch Controller Programming
In many applications, touch screens face enormous challenges. They have to be able to withstand moisture, dirt and vandalism and also must be easily operated with thick gloves. Our engineers are specialists in touch controller programming and ensure that the touchscreen works perfectly even under the most difficult conditions. Do you have a project with a challenging touch application? We look forward to finding a solution for you.
As an example, we have created a video in which we operate a DITO touch sensor with a 4mm thick PMMA protective screen with different gloves and under the direct influence of water. Even with a combination of an industrial standard glove and a chain glove, the touch works flawlessly and does not show any false triggers despite wetness. The controller is programmed in such a way that the water droplets are exactly differentiated from the actual touch process.
