The Simple Science of Optical Bonding
September 20, 2017
One of the most pertinent choices when purchasing a display screen is to include optical bonding, before installation. For those that are in the industry, you’ll know this term like the back of your hand. If you’re new to this field, or are thinking about purchasing a custom display system for your business, then it’s important that you get acquainted with optical bonding.
Optical Bonding
Optical bonding is when a glass or touchscreen display is laminated with a protective barrier. This protective barrier can be thought of as the plastic cover over a vehicle’s headlight — it will help it stand the test of time, and the hands of the public. To further elaborate, this protective cover bonds to the LCD cell, which increases the durability of the screen — especially if it’s a touchscreen display.
The Process
When the process of optical bonding occurs, the manufacturer takes urethane or silicone gel and places it between the screen and the protective cover (or lense). This is a surefire method to eliminate the possibility of air bubbles between the screen and the protective covering. Once this “sandwich” method is established, it will only be a matter of time until the liquid solution dries, creating the optical bond. Finally, when the bond is complete, the screen will be able to sustain slight impact and damage from exposure to sunlight.
