What is The Internet of Things?
September 8, 2021
It seems like everywhere you turn, there’s a new “smart” device that can help you eliminate the need for simple everyday tasks. These connected machines and objects found in our homes, businesses, and factories make up the current industrial revolution. And to understand all of this, it all starts with the Internet of Things.
What is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term used to describe the network of physical items, or “things,” that have technologies inside them such as software, sensors, and more. These devices, ranging from simple household electronics to complex industrial tools, are used to create, store, and exchange data with other devices and systems across the internet, so we can stay connected and share.
Today billions of devices are a part of this network, with numbers only expected to increase. According to Statista, experts estimate that by the year 2025, the network could reach 30 billion units or more.
The Internet of Things is massive, but not every electronic device would be included as part of this network. IoT components must use sensors that capture information from their environment and then analyze and share it through the internet. Some examples of IoT devices include:
- Smart home devices and security systems
- Smart industrial equipment
- Smart cars
- High-speed wireless internet
- Cyber security scanners
Why is the Internet of Things Important?
Over the years, the IoT has become one of the greatest inventions of our time. With this network, everyday objects and technological devices can be connected to the internet and provide seamless communication and transfer of information. This can all happen with minimal human intervention, making these devices easier to utilize than ever.
In this network, the physical world connects with the digital world, and they work together.
