What Makes POS-Line Monitors Suited to Industrial and Retail Installations?

October 21, 2014

POS-Line monitors suit industrial and retail installations because they are modular: one robust metal-housed monitor can be ordered with the controller, front and mounting the installation needs, and it is built from durable components that stay available for the long term. The series was designed for system integrators and OEMs, for uses such as machine controls, interactive vending and information displays at the point of sale. POS-Line is made in Germany by FORTEC Integrated (formerly Distec), our sister company within the FORTEC Group. We supply, configure and support it from Ronkonkoma, New York.

What can be configured on a POS-Line monitor?

The controller, the front and the mounting, so the same monitor serves very different installations. The current range runs from 15 to 46 inches:

  • Controller: a video card with VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort inputs for an external source; a Raspberry Pi based IoT controller; an integrated Intel Celeron panel PC; or the WebPoster M3 web player.
  • Front: open frame, front bezel, front bezel with glass, TrueFlat glass, or safety glass, with 10-finger PCAP touch available.
  • Mounting: built into equipment, furniture or a wall opening using the mounting points, or wall-mounted with a VESA bracket.

The POS-Line 15 IQ Celeron shows the panel PC version: an Intel Celeron J3455 with 4 GB DDR3L memory and a 128 GB mSATA drive behind a 15-inch, 500 cd/m² display. With TrueFlat glass, POS-Line fronts reach IP65 when the customer seals the front to the wall or housing. The full range is on our POS-Line series page.

How rugged is the POS-Line housing?

Rugged enough for factories, digital signage and signposts in public areas. The V2 generation introduced in 2016 moved to a powder-coated aluminum housing that cut weight by about half compared with the previous version, allowed ambient temperatures up to 60°C, and accepted front options without mounting angles. In 2017 the 15- to 24-inch monitors were extended to an operating range of -25 to +65°C (-13 to +149°F). Ranges differ by controller today, so check the product page: the 15-inch video version, for example, is rated -20 to +65°C. The monitors meet CE, FCC and RoHS requirements.

Which POS-Line monitors are readable in sunlight?

The high-brightness models, at 1500 cd/m². Each has an ambient light sensor that adjusts the backlight to the surroundings, keeping content readable in direct sunlight while saving power in dim conditions:

  • POS-Line 21.5 High Bright Touch: full HD with a 10-finger TrueFlat PCAP touchscreen, a 24 V DC supply, and IP65 on the front with customer sealing.
  • POS-Line 31.5 High Bright: a portrait monitor for shop windows and advertising boards, with direct 110 to 240 V AC power and no external power supply, an internal temperature control that protects against overheating, and video, Raspberry Pi IoT or WebPoster M3 controllers. It is built for 24/7 use at 70,000 operating hours.

Why does long-term availability matter here?

Because a monitor designed into a machine or a store rollout has to stay buildable for years. The Group has developed its own TFT controllers for over 20 years, which keeps POS-Line independent of the short life cycles of off-the-shelf controller boards. Some generations have still ended: the 17.3-inch Core i7 panel PC and the rack-mount versions are discontinued, and Mitsubishi, whose panel was in a 19-inch, 1,200 cd/m² model, is discontinuing its TFT display production entirely. Our obsolescence management plans that change with the customer, through a last-time buy or a qualified replacement. On a project basis, POS-Line can also be supplied in other diagonals, with other inputs, or with custom firmware such as a tailored OSD.

For web-content and video players on POS-Line, see how to show web content or video on a networked monitor without a PC. Tell us where the monitors will be installed and what they have to show, and we will take it from there. We recommend the size, controller and front, configure the monitors, and stay with the project from first samples to series production, backed by our technical services.
