Which TFT Displays Handle Extreme Temperatures Outdoors and in Vehicles?

March 3, 2021

For equipment that works outdoors or in vehicles, the TFT displays we supply cover operating ranges from -20 to +80°C up to -40 to +85°C, in sizes from 10.4 to 21.5 inches. Each keeps a sharp, true-color image from hard frost to high heat, and most pair the temperature range with the brightness to stay readable in sunlight. We supply them with the controller, touchscreen, and cover glass that turn a panel into a working display assembly.

Where are these displays used?

Wherever a display sees the outdoors or a vehicle cab: agricultural and automotive equipment, fuel stations, and demanding industrial applications. The G104ACJ-L01 is one of the few TFT displays rated for the full -40 to +85°C, and the G156HAN04.1 combines -30 to +85°C with 1500 cd/m² for extreme cold, heat, and direct sunlight. For how these conditions shape the rest of a design, see display technology for agriculture and outdoor applications and how temperature affects industrial displays and embedded computers.

What does a wide-temperature panel need around it?

A controller, a backlight driver, and brightness control, matched to the panel’s interfaces. The details differ by panel:

  • The G104ACJ-L01 has no integrated LED converter, and its LVDS and backlight interfaces both leave the panel on an FFC cable. Our IF432 FFC adapter and backlight driver board gives it two robust connectors for the TFT controller and an integrated converter for the LED backlight.
  • The G121XCE-L01 and G156HAN04.1 are controlled over LVDS, and the G156HAN04.1 has its LED converter built into the panel. We supply both as ready-to-connect kits, the G156HAN04.1 with our PrismaMediaECO-II TFT controller.
  • The G215HVN01.3, combined with one of our TFT controllers and a light sensor, adjusts its brightness to the ambient light automatically, so it stays readable with optimized power consumption.

Can a wide-temperature display take touch and cover glass?

Yes. We pair these displays with PCAP touchscreens for interactive operation, and with protective glass where the application needs it. We bond the touchscreen and glass directly to the display with VacuBond® optical bonding in Ronkonkoma, which makes the display and touchscreen one robust, stable unit. How to design a display for harsh environments covers the whole assembly.

Which wide-temperature panels are discontinued?

AUO’s 24-inch G240HW01V0 in the version (S03) rated -20 to +70°C, a full HD panel with 300 cd/m² and a 178° viewing angle, is end-of-life. If it is designed into a product you still build, give us the part number and we will find a replacement.

Tell us where it has to work, and we will take it from there. We recommend the panel for your temperature range, add the controller, touchscreen, and glass, bond the assembly, and stay with the project from first samples to series production.
