Which IP65 Panel PC Fits Your Application: POS-PRO IQ, IoT or Monitor?
December 6, 2021
The right POS-PRO panel depends on where the application runs: the POS-PRO IQ is an x86 panel PC for applications that need a PC, the POS-PRO IoT runs on a Raspberry Pi based controller for lighter, programmable HMIs and web or video content, and the POS-PRO Monitor is a touch display for an external computer. All three share the same platform: a CE-certified, slim and robust housing with an IP65 front against dust and water jets, a 10-finger PCAP touchscreen, and a smartphone-like flat front. The PRO series is developed by FORTEC Integrated (formerly Distec), our sister company within the FORTEC Group, and we supply, integrate and support it from Ronkonkoma, New York.
How do the three POS-PRO versions compare?
The 10.1-inch models show the differences most clearly. All three have 1280 x 800 resolution, 850 cd/m² brightness and the same footprint:
| POS-PRO IQ 10.1 | POS-PRO IoT 10.1 | POS-PRO Monitor 10.1 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controller | x86 PC, Intel Pentium N4200 | Raspberry Pi based Artista board | PrismaMediaECO-II video controller |
| Memory and storage | 4 GB DDR3L, 64 GB M.2 SATA | microSD card | None (display only) |
| Interfaces | HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet | HDMI, USB, Ethernet, audio line out | DisplayPort, USB-B for touch |
| Supply | 12 to 24 V | 12/24 V | 12 to 24 V |
| Operating temperature | 0 to +60°C | -20 to +70°C | -20 to +70°C |
The IQ suits machine control, HMIs and medical technology, where an application already runs on x86. It can be supplied with Android 13 preinstalled, which brings over-the-air updates, kiosk mode, remote device management, custom branding and boot animations, and extended security updates, on top of x86 computing power. The IoT version lets engineers program their own applications or use any operating system the Raspberry Pi supports, and adds WebPoster and VideoPoster software options and Wi-Fi; an HDMI input is also available. The series also comes in 7, 13.3 and 15.6 inches, with high-brightness versions of several sizes. All are listed on our PRO series page.
How are POS-PRO panels installed?
Into a wall with the optional mounting frame, or on an arm or stand through the VESA holes. The mounting frame integrates the panel into concrete, wood or drywall, and integrated passive cooling lets the system run under full load even at high ambient temperatures, with no fan. On a project basis, the glass can be an antibacterial glass that kills bacteria quickly and efficiently. The water resistance is shown in our short film, Rubber Man, in our POS-PRO durability post.
Is there a round POS-PRO display?
Yes. The POS-I-PRO is a native round display, not a rectangular panel masked to a circle: 3.4 inches, 800 x 800 pixels, with an optically bonded 10-point PCAP touchscreen under hardened protective glass and an IP65 front in a powder-coated aluminum housing. Because ordinary operating systems draw a rectangular desktop and would cut off the corners, it comes with a basic software framework for true round screens. It is offered in four versions, from the display alone with Micro HDMI and USB-C to the POS-I-034-00-PRO-V4, a complete unit with an integrated Raspberry Pi 4B and a mounting frame.
What is Haptic Touch on the PRO series?
Haptic Touch is a touchscreen technology that creates software-definable textures on the glass. It was announced in December 2021 as an option for PRO series monitors and panel PCs. It uses electroadhesion, with no moving parts: locally defined electric fields change the friction of the touch surface, which the finger feels as roughness or texture. Tactile controls let operators use a touchscreen with less visual attention, opening touch to tasks that previously needed physical buttons or switches, and an API sets the size, position and type of feedback for each virtual control. The 10.1-inch POS-IQ-PRO was the first model, from February 2022, with other sizes from 7 to 15.6 inches to follow and further sizes on a project basis. If tactile feedback matters for an HMI, raise it when we scope the panel.
Which earlier POS-PRO models are discontinued?
Earlier POS-IQ-PRO and POS-RP-PRO part numbers, including 10.1-, 12.1-, 12.5- and 15.6-inch models, and the 4K POS-4K-PRO are end-of-life. The 12.1-inch POS-RP-PRO ended because Mitsubishi is discontinuing its TFT display production. Where a fielded design uses one of these, our obsolescence management covers a last-time buy or moving to a current POS-PRO model. For our compact, high-brightness IP65 monitors, see also the IP6X series.
These applications are examples, not limits: we design POS-PRO panels into whatever device the product requires. Tell us where the panel has to work and what it has to run, and we will take it from there. We recommend the version and size, integrate it, and stay with the project from first samples to series production, backed by our technical services.
